From Climate Anxiety to Climate Resilience and Regeneration in Education

Together with educators and experts, we are working on a new approach to climate education.

Welcome to the Clarity Project

CLARITY is a European project that reimagines climate education by helping children and youth move from climate anxiety to resilience, connection, creativity and regeneration. Bringing together insights from psychology, pedagogy, arts and sustainability science, CLARITY places emotional competence, imagination, values and collective agency at the heart of learning. The project offers a practical toolbox of ready-to-use activities that support educators in creating caring, future-oriented and transformative learning environments, and complementary resources.

In Europe, climate education tends to focus on teaching complex scientific facts that pose existential threats, without adequate consideration for the learners’ emotional capacities. At the same time, the inner competences needed for collective action to address today’s polycrisis lack attention. This situation contributes to rising levels of stress and anxiety in children, youth, and teachers, with devastating societal impacts. A radical shift in primary, secondary and higher education, as well as in teacher and educator training, is urgently needed to foster planetary health and well-being. We are working on this shift, together with European educators and experts.

The CLARITY resources

Toolbox

Lesson plans and activities for teachers and learners!

The CLARITY Toolbox guides educators to nurture emotional resilience, imagination, connection and collective action — one practical activity at a time. The toolbox covers the knowledge that needs to be acquired, the tools that can be used with and/or by the younger generation, as well as the skills that children and youth need to build, according to a trauma-informed approach.

Self-paced course

An online self-paced course for educators that ensures that educators have the opportunity to build their own transformative skills and competencies before teaching their learners. The materials contribute to the continuous professional development of educators, by building capacities for innovative and competence-based teaching.

Teacher’s Guide

This document introduces the core ideas behind transformative climate resilience education and explains how to work with the toolbox in a thoughtful, trauma-informed way. It offers background knowledge, pedagogical guidance and practical suggestions to help you integrate the five CLARITY competence areas into your teaching.

Literature Review

This comprehensive literature review explores the vital role of transformative education in addressing climate anxiety and fostering resilience, creativity, and regeneration among children and youth. It highlights innovative strategies that link inner development with systemic transformation, equipping educators to support learners in navigating the climate crisis with hope, agency, and collaborative action.

Competence framework

Based on our research and consultations, we have adapted and operationalised the GreenComp Framework to a “transformative climate resilience education framework for children and youth” – providing clear guidance for educators on pedagogical approaches to GreenComp suitable for young learners, considering climate anxiety.

Policy brief

The research and framework formulation resulted in a policy brief targeting education policy stakeholders, synthesising how to integrate the adapted framework into policy and school curricula. The focus is on sensitising and training educators concerning climate-anxiety and fostering transformation.
